ALTITUDINAL FRONDESCENCE | UNITING THE TRANQUILITY OF NATURE WITH THE URBANITY OF MAN-MADE STRUCTURES, MENARA HAP SENG 3 STANDS PROUDLY WITH A DESIGN THAT TRIUMPHS IN THE INTEGRATION OF COMMERCE, LANDSCAPE AND ART IN THE WORKPLACE

Strategically located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the outstanding Menara Hap Seng 3 blends the complexities of man and the harmonies of nature within its stupendous structure that soars to exceptional heights. With sophisticated materials and neutral colour palettes to emphasise the vibrancy of the pioneering green wall it houses, the design approach utilised succeeds in creating an unconventional yet inviting office ambience which signifies a stimulating progression in culture.
In collaboration with local Malaysian firms SA Architects Sdn. Bhd (SAA) and Sachi Design, the building was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), a world-renowned American architecture firm. This 26-storey skyscraper is truly a sight to behold; the sleek, glossy and double-glazed oblong tower stands out among the skyscrapers surrounding it. The building’s design is aesthetically pleasing yet functions as a commercial building that also meets top-notch industry standards, being in compliance as a GBI and LEED Gold Certified, Grade-A office building within the MSC Zone.
As part of the consistent efforts of Hap Seng Group in promoting green initiatives throughout their developments, the team explored several possibilities riding on the concept of “The Living Wall”. The result is Malaysia’s first-ever vertical green wall, a 20-storey high internal green wall and atrium space. The triple volumetric open-air space serves as an extension of nature within a corporate environment. It is superimposed between the office tower and podium area, providing uninterrupted cityscape vistas complemented by a natural cooling breeze.
The concept of interior design within the building was inspired and derived from nature; by metaphorically mimicking the growth of greenery or landscape within an urban building that creates a sense of serenity. In also curating a space with a sense of liveliness, the introduction of reflective materials within the calm matte finishes with proportionate yet random arrangements, from ceiling to the wall and floor, mimic the existence of water puddles after the rain.
The internal atriums of the building bring in a source of indirect natural daylight to illuminate the internal spaces of the offices, providing a sense of soothing visual comfort towards greenery for occupants at every floor. The addition of random positioning of light fittings casts an interesting play of light and shadows which mirrors the phenomenon of nature, in which natural daylight penetrates through the gaps between branches and leaves. This garden in the sky illuminates the entire tower, aiming to inspire, energise and harmonise occupants and visitors alike.
There is a strong emphasis on verticality in the finalisation of the building materials such as stones, aluminium claddings and glass panels that expresses not only a sense of spaciousness but also provides a soaring effect in capturing a visual of tremendous height. These subtle touches forge a poetic journey which brings visitors along a carefully crafted story.
