Dive a little deeper into the sensational designs that were honoured with DOTY 2022’s prestigious Building Transformation Recognition Award, courtesy of the ingenious minds responsible for their captivating beauty and renewed sense of purpose.

The Building Transformation Recognition Award (BTRA) recognises the dedicated initiatives taken in building restoration and transformation of an existing building as an effort towards sustainability, respecting the unique challenges tackled in doing so. It encourages the restoration of old buildings, preservation of heritage as well as the creative use of space and function. Receiving this invaluable accolade under the Designer of the Year (DOTY) Awards 2022, an illustrious event organised by ACG Media, are six of the following designers and architects who have made their mark across the Malaysian landscape with their uniquely spectacular designs which pay homage to the past, and at the same time, move boldly towards the future.

Project: Platinum Noble Club

Conceived as a place where businessmen can gather, connect and collaborate, Joe and Yan of INCH Theory decided that the design of Platinum Noble Club needed to be luxurious, comfortable and elegant … ultimately ensuring that guests will feel as exclusive and engaging as the ambience itself. “Transforming a very old building into something else was the charm [of the project], witnessing the old disappearing and the new slowly coming in with each step. It’s like life, sometimes we have to change to make it better,” comments the duo.

Bold, vibrant colours clearly play a major role in defining the energetic, vibrant and dramatic mood of the establishment. Take the all-red lounge room for example, whereby to avoid the space from looking too one-dimensional, the team incorporated different shades of red as well as a mixture of smooth and rough textures such as the velvet upholstery and textured rug. To create depth and highlight different areas within the room, they used multiple light sources strategically positioned at the coffee table, wall and ceiling.

One of the biggest challenges faced during the transformation process was dealing with the structural works itself. The previous owner did not possess much of the technical drawings so INCH Theory had to bring in several experts in their respective fields to investigate, advise and execute. However, one move was made easy from the get-go: the decision to retain the swimming pool — a rare fixture in clubs across the Klang Valley, and so all the more reason to keep it, they said.
