Founded in 2016, ipse ipsa ipsum was born out of a desire to create handcrafted furniture and accessories that are luxurious yet accessible- its aim is to provide a 6-star product at a 3-star price. The collaboration with Nathan Yong highlights unique design aesthetics with a rich heritage in traditional Indian craftsmanship- something ipse ipsa ipsum upholds to redefine living by enabling ordinary people to experience an exceptional way of living. Saurabh Mangla explains that the inspiration for the Nathan Yong collection came from Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi, which was built in the Mughal period which also inspired the architecture and the layout of the famed Taj Mahal.
Ipse ipsa ipsum is a true collaboration between the craftsman, the designer and the consumer. These three components are vital in that every piece by ipse ipsa ipsum involves the customer by offering customisation options that empower customers with a heightened sense of ownership over their living space. As ipse ipsa ipsum was borne out of a desire to empower the consumer to choose what they want to buy, they are very much conscious about overall value that lasts. For explanation sake, take the Udaipur Sofa; one can customise the marble or the leather and choose to add laptop tables, mirrors or remote control holders to the sofa. Made with hand-forged solid stainless steel, this sofa system is not something one might easily pick up in the age of cookie-cutter furniture among other things.
Further an impetus to strike an interest towards ipse ipsa ipsum, the arts and crafts centre where they produce their works borne as Saurabh’s grandfather retired from the army and set up a silverware business to serve the army mess- they have now applied the skills of silver-smithing to produce the furniture and accessories from ipse ipsa ipsum. As Nathan’s first co-authored collection with ipse ipsa ipsum endorse craftsmanship, both Nathan and Saurabh have very similar design philosophies, in that they both look to evoke a sense nostalgia and wonderment through their works.
The collection fits in today’s home effortlessly credit to its subtle class as it can easily move from the dining room to the living room. Designed in collaboration with the fledging Singaporean designer Nathan Yong, the eponymous collection features a wide range of furniture and lifestyle accessories that combines the authenticity of natural materials with an element of surprise and slight nostalgia. For one, most of the collection feature hand-cut or mouth-blown glass that depicts an authentic effect that can hardly be replicated. As Saurabh is inspired by the past and the future, the timeless appeal of the collection barely gets due credit.
I’m pleased that ipse ipsa ipsum has planted its flag deep into the ground of luxury furniture. What, then, does Saurabh have under his sleeve to further impact the design landscape? One rationale is for us to keep our eyes peeled for future collaborations and unusual combinations that will surely stamp regional pride. It seems innate, though, to initiate lust over the Sangli Mirror, Saurabh’s personal favourite from the collection: a hand-antiqued mirror that stands on the floor. However, when you look at the back, it is covered with green crocodile print leather and makes a clever shoe rack and a place to hand your scarves: truly encapsulating ipse ipsa ipsum.
