Mounting In Scale

More than just a sport, BUMP Bouldering gym is raising its bar into an ardent climbing community of different scales in height, angle and proportion.

Rugged in the first pop up retail space for startups and other unique commercial complex or mix shops, a bouldering gym mounted its way up on the creative grounds of Jaya One, The School’s youthful community. Bright and game, the gym opens its indoor bouldering shoulders in a modern simple design, welcoming keen climbers alike.

The premium space reveals a first of its kind of sports and lifestyle. The vast white space embodied throughout; coupled with a striking yellow and light-coloured birch plywood creating positive, energetic and progressive vibes. The long, rectangular reception fitted aesthetically along the wooden frame scrim, “bumping” the well-lit name sign board out loud inside and out through the glass window façade.

Besides colours, the bouldering structures come in various scales while the considered space planning constructed befitted for a fitness worked out by Nu Infinity, topnotch interior design and architectural services. Since bouldering is about heights, the massive, irregular structures are shaped into a maze that goes about five meters. Materialised in rectangular units, the walls are covered in colourful plastic rocks and boulders of different shapes and sizes which total to about 80 climbing routes.

Making it more challenging, the bouldering gym is designed for a diverse route-setting every week, granting the team versatility to plan and switch around routes, driving climbers to complete a challenge inwards or outwards. Furthermore, the space arrangement consists of a mixture of wall-steepness and a MoonBoard rim – a self-training board that connects the MoonBoard application with the use of LED to tackle specific bouldering techniques.

To climb, one must learn to fall. Hence, the white, thick mattress-like floor clinched onto the walls to aid in catching climbers’ fall onto a soft, safe landing surface. Before climbing, a basic gym equipment is prepared at the red corner, comprising monkey bars and weight-lifting to strengthen arm muscles for one total body workout. Time-out facilities are also provided at the clean, industrial-designed changing rooms filled with grey, yellow lockers and showering areas.

Summing up the workout day with a treat, a white boxed café is adorned in layers of wooden cut-out squares which hover from the top, holding the growing, flowing plant in place while the light fixtures integrated has transformed the entire piece into an art installation. The ceramic surface is further enhanced with simple seating spaces. Specifically, by planking the light wooden plank onto the side to form a bar-like sitting. Meanwhile, tables and chairs are placed surrounding to accommodate the coffee and snacks dine-in.

Like every gym, a merchandise corner is exhibited before the exit, pumping and gearing up climbers for the next challenge. An all-day gym, this social activity is conceived with a purpose of bringing people together through an adrenaline rush of sports beyond the built human scale ergonomics.
