Interior designers often possess particular skillsets which set them apart such as understanding aesthetics, spatial planning and material usage, while ensuring the final design works well for end user. These are developed over the years as the designers hone themselves in the art of interior design by keeping up-to-date with the latest innovations, trends and styles in the industry.

It is through these very years of toil and hard work that the designers are able to develop their own unique design approach, which will then serve their clients well in designing their spaces.

In today’s competitive market, we often see design firms offering free interior design consultations as a way of potentially attracting more clients. The rationale behind it is this: If the client can book the designer with no obligation, they will be more inclined to make an appointment because there’s no risk for them.

The designer will be able to get their foot through the door (sometimes, quite literally) and visit the client’s home to charm them with a repertoire of design knowledge, skills and insights and hopefully close the sale. Plus, it’s a low-risk strategy for the designer, too.

Except, most of the time, it doesn’t usually work that way.

This will undoubtedly lead to a decline in the quality of interior design services because the industry may undergo a “race to the bottom” model of offering the cheapest services. When services are offered for free, it creates an illusion that the skills and knowledge required to provide those services do not hold value.
