TITHONUS – Ignite the Future of Electric Performance

LASALLE College of the Arts and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) have collaborated to revolutionise Electric Vehicle design. Combining engineering excellence and design innovation, this joint effort has produced a cutting-edge electric vehicle prototype, which will be exhibited from 21 September to 1 October 2023 al LASALLE, College of the Arts, as part of Singapore Design Week.
Led by LASALLE Programme Leader, BA (Hons) Product Design and President Design Award winner Nathan Yong, three product design students – Choong Yu Haun, Namjot Kaur and Joel Yong – worked with SUTD to design the body of the vehicle, demonstrating how electric vehicle design has the potential to evoke emotions through the discipline of product design. Using 3D printing technology and drawing inspiration from the intricate and efficient forms found in insects, the innovative design displays agility and creates a new benchmark for future electric vehicles. The joint project also represents a significant step forward in sustainable transportation design, reflecting Singapore’s dedicated commitment to environmental responsibility and technological advancement.
EVAM – The Chassis: Learn by doing. This essentially sums up Project Electric Vehicle by Additive Manufacturing or Project EVAM. Originally conceived as an educational platform to nurture undergraduates studying at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) to become competent designers and engineers through such a really complex project, it started in late 2020 with a team of 15 SUTD undergraduates from the Engineering Product Development Pillar and Computer Science and Design Pillar. The most innovative element of this electric vehicle (EV is the use of 3D-printed (or additive-manufactured) aluminium-alloy joints to connect all the spaceframe members forming this chassis. The adoption of this approach avoided Issues associated with difficulties in welding aluminium components precisely. (The Czinger 210 supercar also uses 3D-printed joints in its chassis construction.)
