On the 5th of December, two students were awarded the 2019 Asia Young Designer Awards – a competition organised by Nippon Paint Malaysia Group in partnership with IJM Land Berhad. Both Sharifah Binti Mohamad, from City University Malaysia and Tien Jun Xiang from UCSI University will be representing Malaysia at the regional level of the competition, Asia Young Designer Summit 2019/20 – that will be held in Vietnam.
The winner for this year’s Asia Young Designer Awards will stand a chance to embark on a 6 week all-expenses-paid Design Discovery programme at the Harvard Graduate School of Design in Boston, USA, through the Gennosuke Obata Fellowship Fund. This will give the recipient a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience and share different cultures and ideas.
Following this year’s theme – Forward: A Sustainable Future – Tien Jun Xiang and Sharifah Binti Mohamad received the title of ‘Gold Winner’ in the Architecture and Interior Design categories respectively. Both the designs were highly praised by Chief judges Ar. Sarly Adre Sarkum (Architecture Category) and Mr Lai Siew Hong (Interior Design Category).
Tien’s ‘Revival of Hope’ takes inspiration from wanting to preserve both the old and the new. His ecologically-safe architecture for the ‘Burnt Church’ was evident throughout the winning design.
As for Sharifah’s winning design in the Interior Design category – ‘Ladang’, her aim is to encourage Malaysians to live a more healthy lifestyle by designing an urban agriculture organic farm market. Besides that, her design ensures that the area is green and includes elements that promotes sustainability within the area, which are compliant to the Green Building Index (GBI).
The two Malaysian students will be advancing to the regional level of the competition. In hopes to bring back the prestigious title of the Asia Young Designer of the Year 2019/20 and make Malaysia proud. Best of luck to both Tien Jun Xiang and Sharifah Binti Mohamad!
